Think about how important both salt and light are to this world. Imagine if we did not have these two things? Jesus tells us that we are to be salt and light. What does this mean? I think it is important that Christians understand how important we are to this overwhelming and chaotic world. Lets take a look at salt and light and what it all means.
Salt serves many purposes and comes in various forms. It is used to preserve things, it is a seasoning, and we use it to treat roads in snow and ice. There is a multitude of uses for salt. When we are in the kitchen, it adds flavor. Some foods just do not taste as good without salt added in. When snow and ice comes in, salt helps melt things and keeps us from danger. If salt had no value, we would not use it. No one would know about salt if it were not valuable. Salt also spreads; we spread it over our food and on our roads. We do not use just one grain of salt, we use a lot to cover an area.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:13 that we are the salt of this world.
I watched a video not too long ago where they went out and asked young people who Jesus was. There were hardly any of them that got it correct. Some did not even know who He was. This is shameful and we should be very concerned as Christians. It shows we are losing our zest and our flavor. We have been silent for too long. We have not been putting our faith to good use. Therefore, people do not know who Jesus truly is.
Mark 9:50 has a quote from Jesus telling us to be salt among one another. If we do this, we will be at peace together. Think about the division going on in America today. If we were spreading our salt, peace would come our way. It takes more than just one person being salt, we need to do this as a team. This is how the salt spreads. I notice Christians are arguing often on social media about silly things such as versions of the Bible, certain scriptures, flat or round earth and so on. At the end of the day, this does not matter. Our faith and belief in Christ is the important thing, not our opinions. We are here to set an example. How can we do that when we choose to bicker?
Luke 14:34 is also a reminder from Jesus that tells us salt is no good unless it is actually salty. It is thrown away otherwise. We are of no use to God if we are not sharing with others about Christ. That is our primary mission.
Think about the attributes of salt. Are you being the salt of the earth? Are you making every effort you can to tell others about Christ? Think of ways you can change. God promises peace when we are salt. The world desperately needs this and so do we.
When you enter a big city at night, the best thing to see is all the lights. The images from space can even pick up lights we have glowing on earth in the dark. Nothing is better than lights at night. Can you imagine if we did not have them? There would not be much we could get done without it. Think about all the times your power has went out at night, what is the first thing you do? Grab a flashlight, burn a candle, and find a way to make light.
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus tells us we are to be the light. Darkness (evil) surrounds us and only gets stronger as the days go by. We are here to be the light. People should know where to find our light when they need us. We need to set a good example.
Jesus tells us in John 8:12 that He is the light. Whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Jesus is our light. We need to tell others how to find the light we have. We need to outshine the best we can. The world desperately needs us.
How to be salt and light
We would all be bound for hell if we did not have an extremely gracious, loving, and forgiving Heavenly Father. Jesus understands we are human. He knows we have faults. With that being said, we must also understand that we are told many times we have to give an account for what we did here on Earth. We will one day have to stand face to face with God and be reminded of what we have done I honestly dread that day. I have done so many things I regret. I am sure I will do even more. This is why it is vital we make a commitment to do our very best to be an example to this world.
Being salt and light also means having a voice for God when it is needed. We do this through witnessing to others and telling them about our faith. We also do this by taking a stand against worldly things that are not Godly. We must let others know issues such as abortion or not acceptable in God’s eyes. Point blank, it is murder. There are many things in this world that are getting twisted and turned. We cannot stand for that. We must stand up to religions who are creating man made rules that do not adhere to the word of God. People need to know who we are and what we are about.
We cannot go along with the crowd. We are not to blend in with this world. Do not get involved in things you know are not appropriate as a Christian. You must tell people why you cannot participate. We can do this in loving ways. People need to know you are not the same as everyone else.
Do not let problems of the world cause your light to dim. A dim light is harder to find. Sometimes we have to choose to be happy and choose to take the right path even when we do not want to. Sometimes we have to make tough decisions that are uncomfortable. God sees our strength and our struggles. He will give us peace and joy in the midst of trials. Turn to Him when you feel you do not have enough light to carry on.
Explain the light you have to others. Believe me, when you are outshining, people will ask questions. It is abnormal in the state the world is in. You need to tell them why you act the way you do and who gave you the light you have.
Be kind, generous, and helpful to others. Say a kind word to someone who passes you by. Smile and compliment people. Give to others when you can. This does not always have to be money. It can be your time. Help someone in need when you can. Bring dinner over to a sick person or clean their house. These little things show who we are.
Speak the truth. Truth will come out when you begin faithfully praying and reading your Bible. When I started doing this, many things in my life began to change. I started noticing some things about who I am. I started realizing the changes I needed to make. I also started noticing how many people are not speaking the truth. They are making up their own rules or are avoiding things in the Bible in fear of what the world may say.
There is so much we can be doing that we aren’t. I do not know about you, but I wish everyone would come to know my God. He gives me peace and comfort in some of my darkest hours. I do not know how I would have made it through without Him and His forgiveness.
